Stacy Lewis and her husband Gerrod announced back in April they were expecting their first child, a girl, in November. Lewis also announced the Marathon Classic, one of her main sponsor's events, would be the final tournament she would play in before stepping away to prepare for motherhood.
The Marathon Classic is this weekend in Sylvania, Oh.
"Everyone has been asking is this the last one, and yes it is the last one," says Lewis prior to this Thursday's last round, "Just taking it day by day and resting as much as I can. I get pretty tired and the heat obviously doesn't help things, so just kind of minimizing the practice and maximizing what I can get done in a short amount of time and rest up for the next day."
The former Hog got some good news from her sponsor KPMG after announcing her pregnancy news. KPMG telling her they were going to pay her for her full contract no matter how many tournaments she played in. Lewis told GolfWeek.com KPMG told her they wanted to treat her like any of the female employees they have on their team.
It's great news for a female athlete approaching motherhood. Serena Williams has been the highlight at Wimbledon, not only for her play, but for the focused attention on what it means to be a mom and a top athlete in her sport.
Lewis commenting on the situation Tuesday, "The stories that have been written about it and the attention to females in the workplace, and having babies, and how that is all going to work out. So I just want to show people, and even prove to myself too that you can have a family, and have a career and be successful out here. I want my little girl to see that she can do whatever she wants. That hopefully, if she wants to play golf, she can play golf for more money than we are playing for right now, and hopefully can go out there and do the same thing."
The former Hog tees off at 8:26 local time at the Marathon Classic on Thursday.
