Arkansas has six commitments for the Class of 2020 including a pair slated for the defensive side of the ball.
John Chavis and the Arkansas coaches will be looking to continue to stockpile some talent on that side of the ball. The Razorbacks return all their assistant coaches from 2018 with the exception of Kenny Ingram, who replaces John Scott Jr. who left for South Carolina.
Here’s a position-by-position look at the possible numbers for the Hogs in the Class of 2020 on defense. If you missed the earlier story on offense you can read it here.
Arkansas signed seven defensive linemen in 2019. They had three of them enroll in January and the other four will be in Fayetteville in the summer.
The Razorbacks have five seniors playing on the defensive line in 2019. They are McTelvin Agim and T.J. Smith inside with Gabe Richardson, Dorian Gerald and Jamario Bell at the ends. Briston Guidry and Jonathan Marshall are two juniors on the interior defensive line. Nicholas Fulwider and Isaiah Nichols are redshirt freshmen while Eric Gregory, Zach Williams and Mataio Soli were true freshmen in the spring.
Collin Clay, Marcus Miller, Taurean Carter and Enoch Jackson are due to report this summer. It appears the Hogs could add 3-4 more on the defensive line since they have so many seniors. Jonesboro’s Jashaud Stewart is committed to Arkansas and could be a defensive end or linebacker in Arkansas’ scheme.
Arkansas only signed one linebacker in 2019. It appears they could still add another one via the Graduate Transfer route. Zach Zimos will report this summer.
The current team went through spring drills with seven scholarship linebackers. De’Jon Harris is the lone senior among the group. The scholarship juniors are Hayden Henry, Giovanni LaFrance, Deon Edwards and Grant Morgan. Bumper Pool is a sophomore. Andrew Parker is a redshirt freshman.
It would seem very likely the Hogs add at least 3-4 linebackers in 2020.
Arkansas has a commitment from New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr cornerback Jamie Vance. They are expected to add 5-7 defensive backs including the nickel position in the Class of 2020.
Britto Tutt is a senior cornerback. There are no juniors and the two sophomores at cornerback are Montaric Brown and Jarques McClellion. The redshirt freshman on scholarship is LaDarrius Bishop. Devin Bush and Greg Brooks Jr. were true freshmen who went through spring drills after enrolling in January.
At safety, it would seen that senior Brenden Young could be a strong candidate to earn a scholarship before the 2019 season. Kamren Curl, D’Vone McClure and Micahh Smith are juniors. Joe Foucha and Myles Mason are sophomores. McClure and Brooks played the nickel position this spring.
In the secondary, Arkansas has Malik Chavis and Jalen Catalon enrolling in June. It appears possible the Razorbacks could still add a Grad Transfer defensive back as well to the 2019 class.
In addition to Young, a couple of other walk-on defensive backs in the spring who turned some heads are redshirt frehsmen Simeon Blair and Nathan Parodi.
