Working for You: Avoiding contracting scams

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Tonight the Better Business Bureau has a warning for storm victims.

With some Arkansans recovering from the recent tornadoes and with the threat of more severe weather. The Better Business Bureau has a warning for you before hiring contractors.

BBB President and CEO Janet Robb says it’s important to get at least three quotes before picking a contractor.

She also suggests you check the contractor’s history with the BBB and with the Arkansas Contractor Licensing Board.

“Sometimes the contractor will say, “Hey I’m licensed and insured,’ and what they mean is they have a city privilege license or a business license, they don’t have a contractor’s license,” says Janet Robb.

Robb says it’s not uncommon for contractors to ask for a percentage of the bill up front but you should never pay more than 50 percent.

And if contractors just show up on your front door, be leery.

By doing some homework up front you could save yourself and your pocketbook some heartache in the end.
