Update: Teen Suspect Identified in Newport Police Officer Killing

NEWPORT, Ark. – Arkansas State Police (ASP) say a teen who turned himself in shortly after Monday night’s killing of a Newport Police Department officer is being held in the case.

The suspect in the shooting death of Lt. Patrick Weatherford, 41, has been identified as Tyler Jermiale Calamese, 18.

Calamese is expected to appear for a bond hearing in Jackson County District Court (Newport Municipal Building) at 9 a.m. Wednesday where he is expected to be formally charged.

Calamese is currently being held on suspicion of Capital Murder. We believe he is the suspect in the case.

The ASP said the shooting happened while the officer was investigating a vehicle break-in after which the suspect ran away and the officer chased after him. The suspect then turned and shot the officer, the ASP said.

Lt. Weatherford died at a Newport hospital a short time after he was wounded.

Late Monday night, a procession of law enforcement vehicles escorted the officer’s body from Newport to the State Crime Lab in Little Rock. Late Tuesday morning, another police procession returned his body to Newport.

“Today is a tragic day for law enforcement,” said ASP Director Col. Bill Bryant at the podium. “We do not want to jeopardize the integrity of this investigation…every available resource in Arkansas will be working on this case.”

We spoke with a classmate of Tyler’s Tuesday. Watch here:
