YELL COUNTY, Ark. – The suspect in Thursday morning’s triple-homicide, in which two females and a Deputy were killed, is now in custody after an hours-long standoff.
In a press conference Thursday, Arkansas State Police identified the suspect as James Bowden, 42. Police say after Bowden shot the three victims, he hid out in a house where he held his girlfriend, Haley, hostage. He is charged with three counts of Capital Murder in the deaths of Lt. Kevin Mainhart and two females who have not been identified. Haley is safe and will be interviewed by police.
We spoke with James Bowden’s sister, Julie Bowden Inmon, who says her family is “very sorry” and “feels terrible” about what happened. She adds that they “never expected anything of this caliber to happen.”
Julie helped law enforcement in the effort to get her brother to surrender himself. She said she spoke with James while he was barricaded in the house during the standoff.
“It was very hard. He didn’t want to come out. He thought that he’d be shot,” Julie said.
Julie said she was able to speak with her brother on the phone and urge him to turn himself him. She played a recorded message from their father, who also urged James to give up. James surrendered about an hour after that phone call.
“We are very sorry for what happened. Of course we wish things didn’t happen this way,” Julie said, when asked if she had any words for the fallen deputy’s family. “The only thing I can say is that we are very sorry and our heart goes out to them.”
Julie said James is a father. He has two sons and a daughter, and was a father to Haley’s children as well.
