ASP: Three officers injured in assault, suspect arrested

HOXIE, Ark. – Arkansas State Police say three law enforcement officers were injured and a suspect is in custody after the officers were assaulted Monday morning.

According to a statement sent by Arkansas Police Monday afternoon, a Hoxie police officer saw a man walking along an overpass at the intersection of Arkansas Highway 367 and U.S. Highway 63.

Authorities say Matthew Dale Hatley, 26 of Black Rock, was carrying what was described as an iron pipe.

Hoxie police said Hatley was able to get into the officer’s patrol car and hit the officer with the pipe.

According to law enforcement, Hatley was able to get the officer’s gun and shoot it during the assault. The officer was not hit by the gunfire.

Authorities say Hatley continued to resist, but officers were able to disarm him.

According to state police, two officers were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and a third was treated and released.

Hatley is being held at the Lawrence County Detention Center and faces multiple aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer charges.

HOXIE, Ark. – Two police officers are in the hospital Monday after an incident in Hoxie. 

Hoxie police and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office tell KAIT-TV in Jonesboro the officers were taken to the hospital for treatment after an incident on Highway 367, but did not say what happened.  

According to reports, one of the officers is from Hoxie and the other is from Walnut Ridge.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, there are numerous law enforcement officers at the scene.  

A spokesperson for Arkansas State Police said their Criminal Investigation Division has been requested to take over the investigation.
