HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – A mudslide in eastern Arkansas is causing major headaches for drivers and road crews.
This area of Hwy 185 South in Helena-West Helena is prone to mudslides.
ARDOT crews spent Monday scooping up tons of dirt after the side of a hill gave way.
People who live there say it could have seriously hurt someone if they’d been driving by when it collapsed.
The city’s mayor says trying to prevent mudslides has been tough.
“Especially where you have roads, where we’ve already had to cut in. We’ve had an unusual amount of rainfall this winter, but that’s exactly right. They were down there, I want to say, two weeks ago, just trying to keep it off the road,” says Mayor Kevin Smith.
Mayor Smith says city engineers are working on a permanent fix but it may take a while because they have to get permission from private property owners.
