Shipping Tips for Online Shopping

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — It has been a record-breaking holiday season for online sales, which means more packages are being shipped to customers all across the country in the weeks leading up to Christmas Day.

We have a look at some expert tips to make sure those packages arrive safely, and stay out of the hands of thieves.

For starters, mega-retailer Amazon allows customers the option to have their package shipped to an Amazon Locker, which is a secure place for point-and-click purchasers to pick up their items. For added convenience, returns can also be exchanged via an Amazon Locker, so if you happen to receive one of those “You really shouldn’t have” gifts, it’s a snap to send back. For Little Rock shoppers, the closest Amazon Locker is located at the Whole Foods on Bowman Road.

Some other options for doorstep security include investing in a “smart” doorbell or cloud camera. Products such as the Ring Video Doorbell allow you to interact with visitors to your front porch, whether announced or not, as the app will open the connection whenever the motion sensor is triggered, not just when the bell is rang. A protection plan offered monthly provides for recording and cloud storage of the video captured.

Another potential strategy is to sign up for tracking options from carriers. USPS, for example, offers a service they call “Informed Delivery” that tracks packages and allows the user to provide delivery instructions. The service is free and is used in conjunction with the Informed Delivery smartphone app. Users are able to preview grayscale snapshots of letter-sized mail that is scheduled to be delivered, and can also sign up for email and text alerts.

And finally, for a markedly more low-tech solution, a simple front-door lockbox can be bought online or in many retailers, so that delivery-persons can conceal your cargo at its arrival. Just be mindful that not all of the boxes are designed with a latch, so if you’re looking for a little more security, make sure the box you buy is able to be bolted.
