MOUNTAINBURG, Ark. (KNWA) — A severe water leak is costing the city of Mountainburg thousands of dollars a month.
According to Mayor Susan Wilson, the city has paid $36,331 in water bills since January 1.
This money is coming from the city’s annual $93,500 dollar budget.
City workers have been searching for the source of this problem since November.
They’ve reached out to Arkansas Rural Water and other Water Departments for help.
“We don’t expect it to impact the rates that our customers are paying for their water, we don’t expect them to be out of water for very long. We’ve got our team assembled, our city workers are going to be there, it’s going to be in and out,” Wilson said.
The city of Mountainburg contracted with trenchless leak detection and was then able to locate the source of the leak, which was flowing into a nearby runoff.
The Mountainburg Water Department will repair the leak on Thursday or Friday.
