Draft rules on how charter schools can buy or lease unused, vacant school district buildings will be up for public discussion Thursday.
A new law passed in the 2017 session gives charter schools the option to lease or buy surplus school district facilities. The rules proposed to guide the process allow for some exceptions and set ground rules for how the process would play out. Some proponents of traditional public schools opposed the measure, saying it would drain resources from public school systems.
The Arkansas Education Department’s Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation Division will hold a public meeting regarding the rules on Thursday, January 4 at 1:30 p.m.
The meeting will take place in room 201A of the Department of Education Building (located at One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR 72201).
