LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A 22-year-old found dead in a ditch Monday morning has people in a Little Rock neighborhood on edge.
Many said they heard multiple gunshots ring out before it was over.
“Last night we were in the bed sleeping and we heard gunshots about 8 to 10,” said Kelly and Johnnie Brooks.
The Brooks live right around the corner from where they said several shots were fired overnight.
“I mean real loud shots. They were right behind the window. I hop up, grab the baby, jump on the floor,” said Johnnie.
He added, it wasn’t 30 minutes later, they heard sirens.
“We got up and there was a guy dead in a ditch. Motorcycle sitting right beside him,” said Johnnie.
Mikhal Bailey was found in the street. What remains, is broken plastic and crime tape.
“He had just left the park hanging out with his cousins and she told him to slow down on his bike and that’s the last time she got to talk to him,” said Kelly.
It was just after midnight when police found Bailey next to a stolen motorcycle.
“They thought it was from a motorcycle accident because the motorcycle was in the ditch however when they looked into it further they determined he had been shot at least one time,” said Little Rock Police Lt. Steven McClanahan.
This is Little Rock’s 18th homicide this year, up from this time last year.
“It’s one of the districts we’re keeping an eye on,” said Lt. McClanahan. “Higher than where we’d like to be and we have cleared 11 of those homicides.”
As detectives comb the area, Kelly and Johnnie said something has to change.
“We gotta do better as a community. It’s sad,” said Kelly. Adding, “We gotta respect each other and we have to come together as a community. Blacks, whites, everyone has to come together.”
