CONWAY, Ark. — A man is in custody after police say he fired a gun inside a post office on Hogan Lane.

No one was injured.

It happened shortly before noon.

A witness reported seeing the suspect in the lobby as she was leaving the building.

At that time, police say the man fired the gun, but did not strike anyone.

Officers responded and took the man into custody.

The U.S. Postal Service has issued the following release:

On September 29, 2018, shortly before noon, a man entered the Conway, Arkansas Post Office and discharged a handgun.  Conway Police have apprehended this person. US Postal Inspectors immediately responded and are currently working with the Conway Police Department on this investigation.  As this is an active investigation, we are limited in what information  may be provided to the media.  However, Postal Inspectors want the public to know the following:
1.    There were no injuries of employees or customers due to this incident.
2.    We believe this is an isolated incident and the sole suspect is in custody.
3.    He is not, nor has ever been, an employee of the US Postal Service.
4.    Conway Post Office is currently closed, but mail delivery to customers is on-going.
At this time we are not able to speculate on motivation.  As information, assaulting a US Postal Service employee using a firearm is a federal offense, punishable by up to  20 years incarceration (Title 18, United States Code, Section 111)..
