Two Young Girls Left Behind During Field Trip with Boys and Girls Club

MAYFLOWER, Ark. -- Two young girls - both under the age of 10 - were left behind on the way to a field trip in Mayflower. The 7 and 9 year old girls were found by police after a bystander notified them that the girls were left unattended - earlier this week.

Tracie Tucker lives in Mayflower - right across from a park and elementary school - "It's a good community, you know we have good schools here," says Tucker. Where on Tuesday - Mayflower police say they found two young girls -  7 and 9 years old - sitting on the bleachers inside a nearby gym. "Somebody came into city hall and said that they found 2 young children over in our city park that were unattended," says Gene Chase, patrolman with the Mayflower Police Department.

Police say the girls told them they were on a field trip with the Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County - to see a movie  - when one of the older kids riding on the bus told them there was no room. That's when police say the young girls walked back into the gym. "My first reaction is, "My God, anything could have happened to these two little girls," says Chase. "In this day and age perfect setup for someone to lure them away."

"That's sad, that's sad in this heat that had to be miserable," says Tucker.

The Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County issued a statement saying, "We are aware of an incident related to club transportation and field trip procedures. Thankfully, no club members were harmed during the incident in question."

They go on to say, "We are deeply alarmed and concerned, and have instituted an assessment to review all transportation and field trip procedures."

"If you're going to be leaving a facility you need to make sure you do a proper head count," says Chase. While Tracie hopes more is done to keep kids - like her granddaughter safe, she's grateful the two young girls in the end - turned out to be OK.

The Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County say after this incident - they have taken a number of extra steps to ensure the safety of their members.
