On this day in 1940, the first African-American officer in the Arkansas State police was born in Dermott, Arkansas.

Marion Taylor Jr. was born to Marion Taylor Sr. and Bessie White Taylor.

He  graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1957 and earned a political science degree from Arkansas Baptist College (now Ouachita Baptist University).

After serving in the U.S. Air Force (1957-1963) he was hired on at Arkansas State Police.  

He served as a public service spokesman and instructor.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas he accepted a position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1973.  

He died on January 19, 2000 and is buried at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Little Rock.  

He was survived by his wife and five sons.
