MONTICELLO, Ark. - A local man is in jail after police say he randomly stabbed a man on a Walmart parking lot.
Christopher Barfield, 25 is facing charges of Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder and Battery, 1st Degree.
Police were called to the store off Hwy. 35 late Tuesday night after witnesses say a man with special needs who was sitting in his truck was stabbed in the throat by a man he didn't even know.
Billie Claire Sanderlin, who works nearby, says the random stabbing next door hits too close for comfort.
“I closed here, got out around 9:30 and I think it happened around 11,” she says. “I was kind of like nervous.”
Investigators say the victim was sitting in his car when Barfield opened the door and cut the man's neck.
“You’re not promised tomorrow. Good Lord watching out over him,” says John Hopper. He's a friend of the victim, who he says has cerebral palsy.
“Always been the type of person to have a huge heart, real down to earth guy," Hopper adds.
The victim is expected to survive, but friends say he needed more than a dozen stitches to close his wound.
“I’ll be more aware of my surroundings,” says Jaylen Dranlik, who lives in Monticello.
While Billie works, she is also still pondering why the stabbing suspect tried connecting with her on social media days before the attack.
“I was like, 'oh my God,' he added me on Facebook the other day,” she says.
Sanderlin did not accept his friend request. Police have not released the victim's name.
Barfield is in jail and officials there tell us it took hours to process him because he was "in quite the state" when officers brought him in.
