GRADY, Ark. – Around 8 a.m. Monday morning, staff at the Varner Unit Prison discovered an inmate unconscious in his cell, the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) said.
Officials say the responding correctional officers and medical staff began emergency treatment on the inmate, who is identified as Rodney Weston. Weston was pronounced dead at the Varner Unit.
Arkansas State Police officials were immediately notified and will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
The Department of Correction will be conducting a separate internal investigation into the incident.
Weston is described as a 36-year-old black male. He was serving a sentence of Life Without Parole for Capital Murder out of Chicot County.
