The layoffs would impact hundreds of employees and could happen as early as this Friday.
According to the Wall Street Journal, some Walmart department directors have been told to cancel travel plans and make sure to be at the office this Friday.
KNWA first reported on chatter of a pending layoff this summer, when a recruiting firm said they'd heard that more than 1000 vice presidents would soon lose their jobs.
KNWA spoke with U of A Economist Kathy Deck who said the signs of a coming layoff are there: "We've been kind of getting hints for awhile that they are trying to optimize things and unfortunately when a business talks about optimization it often does mean a layoff."
"Walmart is in a very challenging retail environment right now," Deck went on to say. She says the potential layoffs come at a time when Walmart is navigating new formats and the online world.
One example of new formats: Walmart's recent experimentation with online grocery systems, where customers can pre-order groceries online and have them delivered to their cars.
KNWA spoke with a Walmart communications spokesperson who said Walmart declines comment on this issue.
