Hats given to newborns to raise awareness on congenital heart disease

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.- Volunteers and staff members at hospitals in Little Rock are raising awareness of congenital heart defects by giving kits to moms of babies born in the month of February.

It's all part of the American Heart Association's "Little Hats, Big Hearts" program.

The kits contain handmade red knitted hats for the newborns, and information about heart-healthy habits and toothbrushes from partners at Delta Dental.

"It's a wonderful thing because it raises awareness of congenital heart disease," says Dr. Ricardo Sotomora, a pediatric cardiologist. "Congenital heart disease affects approximately .8 percent of all newborns."

The hats were put together by volunteers throughout the holiday season last year, and this is the second year the Central Arkansas American Heart Association has participated.
