County Residents Start Petition Against Annexation Into Beebe

BEEBE, Ark.- A proposed annexation in the city of Beebe has some who live in the county unhappy about the prospect.  One man even decided to take action.

"Dogs are running around.  If I want to build something I build it," says Robert Richards, a lifelong White county resident, who says he's not ready to join the city of Beebe now.

"Coming out here, telling us what to do, everything about this," says Richards.  "No, we don't want this!"

Richards says he speaks for himself and most of his neighbors in the same boat who have signed a petition he started against the proposed annexation.

Beebe Mayor, Mike Robertson says annexations are always met with resistance, and this one is no different.

"People think that their lifestyle is going to change when actually they're not going to really notice any change whatsoever," says Mayor Robertson.

He says the city wants to move forward to bring in a stretch of Highway 64 West for future commercial development in Beebe and the ability for the city to provide water services in that area.

The plan is to extend out from the current city limits to a water station at Rainey Road.  In total it's about 30 residents in the proposed annexation area.

Mayor Robertson says it's a benefit for the people living along that section of county road with the services the city can provide, like police and fire protection and sanitation.

Richards says he and most of his neighbors still aren't on board.

"People just don't want this annexation," says Richards.  "It's that simple."

The annexation issue will be on the upcoming November ballot for a vote.
