Arkansas Co. Murder Investigation Underway

TICHNOR, Ark.-- The Arkansas County Sheriff said a woman called 9-1-1 claiming she shot her boyfriend. That man was found dead and now a murder investigation is underway just south of the small town of Tichnor, according to Sheriff Todd Wright.

Sheriff Wright said 59-year-old Maria Salers claimed she had been in an argument with her 55-year-old boyfriend on that call.

Deputies responded to the house on Whiting Lane in rural Arkansas County.

Sheriff Todd Wright described the area, "One of the farthest points south along the Arkansas River canal."

Unless the tractor's cranked nature was about the only noise around in the area that's located just south of the town Tichnor.

"They just wrapped up their first interview with her," the sheriff told us.

It was quiet until Thursday afternoon when Sheriff Wright said what happened inside the rural home landed a 59-year-old Maria Salers in handcuffs to be questioned and held at the jail.

He said, "Stuttgart Police Department 911 dispatch center received a call from Maria stating that she had shot her boyfriend. They had been in an argument."

The call came in just after 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

Wright said, "We find Bobby Middleton, (a) 55-year-old white male, in the bedroom suffering from a single gunshot wound."

He said with the boyfriend dead that deputies detained the girlfriend and called in AR State Police to help investigate.

We learned this isn't the first call at the home.

"We went one time to do a welfare check on her," Wright said that was about 2 months ago.

He continued, "Also back on June 29th. She was wanting to leave the residence and we picked up her personal belonging and took her to the sheriff’s office where she had family come pick her up."

Thursday she was in custody waiting to find out if she'll face a formal murder charge.

We found out Salers will stay in the AR County Jail on what's called an investigative hold until the prosecutor decides whether or not to formally charge her with murder.
