LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Some Arkansas schools are announcing proposals to require masks in schools, pending approval from local school boards.

Arkansas School districts that have made plans for the upcoming school year:

Academics Plus Public Charter Schools

Voted to require face masks.

Alma School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Alpena School District

Voted to require face masks

Arkadelphia School District

Voted to require face masks

Arkansas School for the Deaf and Visually Impaired

Voted to require masks for the upcoming school year.

Ashdown School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Atkins School District

Voted to require face masks.

Bauxite School District

Benton School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended. The district announced that they will purchase air purifiers for all classrooms in the district to help as students come back to school.

Bentonville School District

Implemented a mask mandate for students 3 & up for the next 30 days. Will be reassessed at the next board meeting.

Bergman School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Berryville School District

Voted to require face masks.

Blevins School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Blytheville School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Booneville School District

Voted to require face masks.

Bradford School District

Bryant School District

The Bryant School Board approved the resolution to require all students, employees and visitors to wear a face mask while on a school bus or in a school district building. This will last for 30 days and will be reviewed.

Cabot School District

Voted to require face masks.

Camden Fairview School District

Voted to require face masks.

Carlisle School District

Masks are required Aug.16- Oct. 11.

Conway Public Schools

Tuesday night the Conway School board voted to require masks at the beginning of the school year. They will follow the stoplight system, when the school gets out of the red zone masks will be optional.

Crossett School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Dardanelle School

El Dorado School District

Elkins School District 

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended. Students who wear a mask will be seated in a section of the classroom only with other children wearing masks.

Fort Smith School Board approves an emergency regulation on wearing masks and face coverings for teachers and staff.

Greenbrier School District

Huntsville School District

Parents and faculty are asked to complete a survey on whether or not to implement a mask mandate for the upcoming school year.

Jacksonville School District

The School board voted to require masks for all students, teachers and visitors inside school buildings and on school buses

Jacksonville North Pulaski School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Jonesboro School District

The school board voted to accept a mask mandate and will review the district mask mandate approximately every 30 days or at each regularly scheduled meeting of the Jonesboro Public Schools Board of Directors. 

The approved policy will require students, teachers and staff to wear masks while in a school building.

LISA Academy

A district-wide mask mandate was approved for Lisa Academy requiring every adult and child to wear face-coverings.

Little Rock School District

The Little Rock School Board Thursday voted to require the face coverings indoors. LRSD was one of the first entities to push back against the state’s banning of further mask mandates and is also one of the last Central Arkansas school districts to vote.

North Little Rock School District

The Board of Education has voted to mandate masks throughout the district. Face coverings must be worn by all staff, students, and visitors while at school or a school function in any school building or facility when riding on school-provided transportation, or at bus stops.

Osceola School District

Paragould School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Parkers Chapel School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Pine Bluff School District

Prairie Grove Schools 

Students are required to wear masks for the upcoming school year. The necessity of the mask mandate will be reviewed at each monthly school board meeting

Pulaski County Special School District

At the School board meeting Tuesday the PCCSD Board of Education unanimously approved that masks will be required for all students, staff and guests. They said they will review this decision in 60 days.

Superintendent Charles McNulty said the mask mandate proposal would require students, staff and guests to wear a mask at all indoor facilities for at least the next 60 days. There’s also a proposed $200 bonus for teachers who are vaccinated by October 1.

Other school districts are expected to tackle possible mask mandates also as schools statewide begin to open in the coming week.

Rogers School District

Rogers School District approves a 30-day mask mandate for students K-12.

Russellville School District

The school board voted Tuesday 4-1 to require face masks for 30 days. The policy states that pre-K-12th grade, teachers, students, staff and visitors will be required to wear masks when unable to socially distance. They will revisit in September.

Salem School District

Sheridan School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Siloam Springs School District

Siloam Springs School Board votes against mask mandate.

Smackover/Norphlet School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

South Conway School District (Morrilton)

Voted to require face masks

Southside School District (Independence)

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Springdale Public Schools 

Students in Kindergarten through 7th grade will be required to wear masks indoors until September 14. Masks will be optional for students in 8th through 12th grades and staff.

Stuttgart School District

Voted to require face masks.

Strong/Huttig School District

Voted to require face masks

Valley View School District

Voted to require face masks.

Warren School District

Voted to require face masks

Watson Chapel School District

Voted on Monday to require anyone indoors on school grounds, in school vehicles to wear masks.

West Fork School District

Voted to require face masks

West Memphis School District

Voted to approve a mask mandate that will require all students, employees and other adults to wear face coverings on a school campus.

White Hall School District

Voted Tuesday to require face masks

Woodlawn School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.

Wynne School District

Wynne Public Schools will recommend wearing a mask but it’s not required 

Yellville-Summit School District

Masks are voluntary but strongly recommended.


Arkansas Universities that have announced plans for the upcoming school year:

Arkansas State University

ASU System Board of Trustees met Thursday to grant each ASU System institution chancellor authority to require face coverings to be used on each respective campus.

So far, both ASU-Jonesboro and Henderson State University have announced that they will require masks on campus.

Arkansas Tech University

Face coverings will be mandatory inside all Arkansas Tech University buildings effective Thursday, Aug. 12, and continuing until further notice.

Southern Arkansas University

SAU will temporarily require face masks in all campus buildings to protect students, faculty, staff, and the Magnolia Community from the rise in COVID-19 variant cases.

University of Arkansas – All Campuses

The Board of Trustees at the University of Arkansas will require all campuses and institutions to implement face-covering policies regardless of vaccination status for students, faculty, staff and guests for all in-door activity and instruction.

University of Central Arkansas

UCA made the announcement that beginning immediately, masks are required inside of all UCA indoor spaces regardless of an individual’s vaccination status. They will also use a three-color system alerting the campus of the community transmission status.
