LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (News Release)- In a ceremony timed to celebrate all educators during National Teacher Appreciation Week, Roberts Elementary Teacher, Jeff Whitlow, was named Little Rock School District Teacher of the Year at the 2019 annual Crystal Awards Gala. Joining Whitlow as level winners are Jessica Sanders (Gibbs), Elementary Teacher of the Year; Carolyn Johnson-Powell (Mann), Middle School Teacher of the Year; and Stella Cameron (Central), High School Teacher of the Year. These winners are among the 65 teachers, representing their respective campuses, honored at the event, Friday, May 10, 2019, at the Statehouse Convention Center.
After being nominated by their peers, applicants who wish to vie for LRSD Teacher of the Year undergo a rigorous process, which mirrors the Arkansas Teacher of the Year program. The level and top teacher(s) are ultimately selected by a panel of judges. The top teacher is also named the “Dr. Marian G. Lacey Award” recipient. Lacey, who passed away in 2017, was a beloved, retired LRSD associate superintendent. LRSD’s Teacher of the Year will also have an opportunity to pursue the state title. District educators have consistently placed in the top five at the state level with last year’s LRSD winner, Stacey McAdoo (Central High School), being named the 2019 Arkansas Teacher of the Year.
Campus winners are recognized with crystal trophies at the dinner in their honor. The top teachers received cash prizes and gift bags from Knowledge Tree. Whitlow also received a Dell computer.
First Student returned as the Presenting Sponsor, with Bank of America, VALIC, LREA, Nabholz, WillSub, and Hiland Dairy back again in successive years. Dell, Magna IV, and Knowledge Tree were in-kind sponsors.
