Update (Dec. 3, 9:35 a.m.):
LITTLE ROCK, AR – A mental evaluation has been ordered for one of two suspects accused in the kidnapping and murder of a real estate agent.
Arron Lewis, 33, and wife Crystal Lowery, 41, appeared in Pulaski County Circuit Court for the first time this morning.
This was the first time that the Jacksonville couple had seen one another in months and also since Lowery had filed for divorce.
Lewis appeared first in the courtroom. He entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to charges of capital murder and kidnapping in the death of Beverly Carter, 50.
Minutes later, Lowery also pleaded not guilty to the same charges.
Neither of them had much to say as they came and left the courthouse in downtown Little Rock.
We spoke to both prosecuting and defense attornies.
“The sheriff’s department obviously did the lion’s share of the work. They did a great job, as they always do and the prosecutor’s office, we’re just now beginning to get into it ourselves,” said John Johnson, the chief deputy prosecuting attorney.
“There’s some other things going on that we’ll be dealing with between now and then. I don’t have all the discovery yet. I’m not sure what all the facts are at this point. We should have those in the next couple of days and we will proceed after that,” said Jim Hensley, attorney for Lewis.
The deadline for Lewis to undergo a mental evaluation is Feb. 26.
Carter’s son Carl was in court today during those proceedings but did not want to say anything about the pair’s court appearance.
