LITTLE ROCK, AR – The City of Little Rock Friday (12/13) celebrated 100 years since a man named John Nolen created a master park plan centered around the downtown area.

In honor of the centennial celebration winners were announced from a selection of a first of it’s kind design competition envisioning Nolen’s gateway to the city.

The Envision Little Rock design competition seeked creative ideas for the establishment of an eastern terminus for Capitol Avenue that would also serve as an iconic gateway to the city.

The overall professional winner was John Krug’s Gateway Twin Towers. Jurors said the design is simple but elegant, completely within reason and significant.

But will we ever see a design like it in future plans for Little Rock?

Little Rock landscape architect, Bob Callans with Keep Little Rock Beautiful, says they wanted to see something beautiful and functional but also connected to the history of the city.

He said, “My hope is that the city can take this and utilize these presentations to actually come up with a feature that’s in that area of Little Rock.”

There was also an overall student winner as well as a few other categories. You can see more of those here.

The Envision Little Rock design competition is planned to be an ongoing annual or semi-annual endeavor, hoping to bring at least a part of Nolen’s vision to the 21st Century.
