SHERWOOD, AR — A softball tournament began Saturday in Sherwood to honor three teenage girls killed in a car crash nine years ago.

42 teams are on hand for the seventh annual “Three Cheerleaders Memorial Softball Tournament.”

The two-day event raises money to provide college scholarships to local students.

Families of the girls – who were cheerleaders and softball players –  said the tournament is what they would have wanted.

“Giving a scholarship in their names and in their memories allows them to continue to be an active part and to have a positive influence in this community even though they’re not here any longer,” said Becky Russell, mother of Jae Lynn Russle.

Jae Lynn, 16, Alicia Rix, 16 and Taylore Hall, 15, were going fishing March 18th, 2004 when their car was struck by a truck at the intersection of Highways 89 and 5 just outside Cabot.

The fundraiser in their names has raised over $250,000 for scholarships since it began.
