FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — UPDATE: Sgt. Tony Murphy with the Fayetteville Police Department has confirmed that the victim of last night’s shooting was a 22-year-old man who was taken to Washington Regional.

Police found the victim at the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It has not been confirmed if the victim died from a gunshot wound.

Police have been working on the scene since the shooting.

The University of Arkansas Police Department is not involved in the investigation, but it’s ready to step in and help if needed.

Even though the shooting happened near campus it was still out of UAPD’s jurisdiction. Captain Gary Crain with UAPD says there are some instances where the department can move outside its boundaries.

“To take law enforcement action or any kind of police action, we have to remain on our jurisdiction to do that. Unless an event happens on our jurisdiction then moves away,” Crain said. “If that’s the case, then we go as far as it takes to resolve that issue.”

Crain is urges students to download the Safe Zone app to their phone. He says it has multiple resources like a way for students to report crimes anonymously.
