EL DORADO, AR (KTVE) – A group in South Arkansas has taken on the task of feeding families that may be going through a rough patch this holiday season.
College Avenue Church of Christ in El Dorado has teamed up with Hugh Goodwin Elementary and Northwest Elementary to give families in need a Thanksgiving meal.
Organizers made their first stop at the neighborhood Brookshire’s to pick up the meal items.
“We bought all the Thanksgiving essentials: hams, turkeys, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes. We bought cranberry sauce, rolls, butter, and some fruit,” says Magen Olive, Thanksgiving Meal Organizer.
From there, they went back to the church to put the items in baskets.
“We had so many items we were able to purchase, that we bought big laundry baskets to put everything in, and those were very heavy,” says Olive.
Thirteen families from these two elementary schools combined will receive the meals.
Organizers say this is to relieve the stress of not having a meal so the family can focus on what they are truly thankful for.
“The whole goal is to help people focus more on friendship and relationships and family during the holiday season, than simply the budget. If that’s something we can help them with, the meal, it allows them to spend more quality time with their family on that end,” says Kent Jobe, College Avenue Church of Christ Preacher.
These meals will be given out over the course of this week.
